Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled a 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which is set to commence on Sunday, November 16. Opener John Campbell, who recently scored his maiden Test century against Team India, has been recalled to the ODI team after six years.

The West Indies are set to take on New Zealand in ODIs. Notably, the fixtures will be played in Christchurch, Napier, and Hamilton on November 16, 19, and 22, respectively. After the ODI contests, the two teams will meet again in a three-Test series in December. The visitors lost the T20I series by a 3-1 margin.

John Campbell Makes a Return to the West Indies’ ODI Squad After Six Years

John Campbell has made a return to the ODI squad after six years. He has been included in the squad following an impressive run in red-ball cricket, including a century against India in Delhi, and a strong Super50 Cup campaign for Jamaica, where he scored 278 runs at a strike rate of 102.20.

Campbell has replaced Brandon King, who has struggled to find consistency across formats. King managed just 62 runs in the ODI series against Bangladesh, and his last fifty came against England more than a year ago. He also recorded four single-digit scores in his last five T20I innings.

Given Campbell’s recent success and King’s dip in form, the selectors opted for a change at the top of the order ahead of the New Zealand ODIs.

West Indies Include Young Pacers to Cover for Several Injured Regulars

The West Indies have included young pacers to cover for several injured regulars. Fast bowler Johann Layne and seam-bowling all-rounder Shamar Springer have received their first ODI call-ups, while Matthew Forde has returned after recovering from a shoulder injury sustained earlier in the year.

Spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, along with injured left-arm quick Ramon Simmonds, have been left out from the side that faced Bangladesh. Key pacers Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and Jediah Blades also remain unavailable due to injuries.

Layne, who made his Test debut in India last month, joins a lineup that includes Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Springer, Forde, and Justin Greaves. Layne is inexperienced in List-A cricket, with just 12 matches and 13 wickets.

Ackeem Auguste has retained his place after debuting in Bangladesh and will continue alongside Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze in the squad captained by Shai Hope.

The West Indies will be aiming to break a drought in New Zealand, as they have not won an ODI series there since Brian Lara’s team swept the hosts 3-0 three decades ago. New Zealand have won 19 of the 31 ODIs played, while the Windies have managed 10 victories, with two games ending without a result.
