West Indies punished by ICC after 238-run thrashing against England in 1st ODI

West Indies were thrashed by England in the first ODI at Edgbaston on May 29, Thursday. The Caribbean side faced a fine after the match, as match referee Jeff Crowe fined West Indies for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first ODI.
Shai Hope led the team that faced five per cent of every player’s match fee as West Indies were one over short in the given time at the end of the first innings.
West Indies fined heavily by the ICC
The match referee imposed a five per cent fine on every player’s match fees under Article 2.22 penalty in the match. The article of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which refers to the minimum over-rate offences.
In an official ICC statement, the West Indies have been fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining the slow over-rate against England in the opening match of the white-ball series against them.
Shai Hope pleaded guilty to the charge of on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, along with the third and fourth umpires named Adrian Holdstock and Graham Lloyd, respectively.
Hope accepted the penalty, avoiding the need for a formal hearing from the ICC. The fine was added to the West Indies' miserable performance, followed by the 238-run defeat in the first ODI against England.
England's batters' aggressive approach
England batters punished the Caribbean bowlers in the first ODI as they scored a record-breaking 400 runs in an ODI match. This was the sixth 400+ run total from the English side, and they won all six matches when they scored 400+ runs.
This was also the first instance when all the top seven batters scored 30+ runs in an ODI inning. England's openers scored 90 runs in the first powerplay and batted at a pace throughout the first innings.
No English batter scored a ton, but every batter scored runs with pace. Jacob Bethell was the top scorer from England’s side as he scored 82 runs off just 53 deliveries. Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Harry Brook scored half-centuries as well.
Harry Brook won the first match as a skipper dominantly. His bowlers bowled out Caribbean batters under 27 overs and won the match by 238 runs.
England vs West Indies 2nd ODI
The Caribbean will look to avenge their loss in the second ODI match against England at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on June 1. While England will look to seal the series in the second ODI game.
The England batting unit’s aggressive approach will be a challenge for the Caribbean bowlers, and the match’s verdict will be decided between the Caribbean bowlers vs England batters.
