Legendary Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya made a triumphant return to the national set-up, though this time as a coach. Under Jayasuriya’s guidance, the Sri Lanka cricket team broke the jinx of around three decades by winning the three-match ODI series 2-0 against India in Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s staggering 27-year wait of winning a bilateral ODI series against India ended in great fashion with Sanath Jayasuriya being at the helm as interim coach. The Islanders crushed Team India by 110 runs in the third and final ODI after winning the second ODI by 32 runs to win the series with a 2-0 margin.

Sanath Jayasuriya guides Sri Lanka to an epic ODI series win over the world's top-ranked India

Sri Lanka’s last series win against India came in 1997, and Jayasuriya was one of the key architects of that triumph, and now once again he was the mastermind behind handing the Indian cricket team one of the biggest embarrassments in ODI cricket history.

After Sri Lanka's remarkable ODI series victory over the world’s top-ranked team, Jayasuriya has lauded his team’s resilience and talent, highlighting how they have emerged from a challenging period with newfound vigor following a tough whitewash in the three-match T20 series.

Sanath Jayasuriya emphasized that the key to Sri Lanka’s success was the players' regained confidence, which was crucial for their exceptional performance against the Men in Blue in the ODI series. The former batting icon hailed his talented players and said that they have shown the world what they can do by crushing the world’s number one ODI team.

Sanath Jayasuriya was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “It was a very long wait because that series I played in 1997 and got a lot of runs in that series. That was the last series we won against India. After 27 years, I am part of the team, and I am very happy to be part of these boys. They are a very nice bunch of players and are talented, and the whole country would have seen what we can do.”

Our players only need confidence: Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya said that the Sri Lankan cricket team faced a very tough time, but they made an incredible comeback in the ODI series. He hopes that the players will continue to get such confidence from the new coach, as he served only as the interim coach, with this series victory being seen as a new era of Sri Lankan dominance in the game of gentlemen.

The interim coach added, “The boys went through a very, very hard time. Even during the T20 series, we played well, but the result was not what was expected. The players realized what went wrong when we came back to Colombo, and they started to play well.”

Jayasuriya signed off by saying, “The players only need confidence. If they get some runs on the board, if they are bowling well, if someone gets starts and gets big runs, so those are the little things they can get the confidence high. At the end of the day, we have beaten the No. 1 team in the world.”
