The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team made history by becoming the first team to win the men's T20 World Cup without losing a single game after beating South Africa by seven runs in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados on June 29.

With this thrilling win in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, Team India ended South Africa’s unbeaten run in the tournament and clinched the first ICC trophy after 11 years since their ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Rohit Sharma joins elite list of World Cup-winning Indian captains

Rohit joined the elite list of Indian captains who won the World Cup for India, becoming the only third captain after legendary Kapil Dev and Dhoni to achieve the feat. He also became the only second captain after Dhoni, who led India to the T20 World Cup title.

Meanwhile, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed immense joy and pride at Team India's historic T20 World Cup victory. The former Indian skipper believes that this triumph marked a significant milestone for Indian cricket, as the team had previously come close to winning major tournaments but had fallen short in the semi-finals and finals.

Gavaskar compared the Men in Blue’s near-misses to scores in the 90s, falling just short of the coveted ICC century. With this World Cup win, the legendary Indian batter said that they have finally achieved their 'century', breaking the 11-year ICC trophy drought.

He lauded the Indian team's remarkable performance and resilience throughout the tournament, saying this remarkable victory was a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying by PTI: “It is a great win after such a long time. Earlier, I kept saying that India was getting 90s but not getting centuries because they were reaching semi-finals and finals. Now, they have got a century and what a wonderful century this is.”

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who achieved a unique milestone by becoming the first player to win the T20 World Cup both as a player in 2007 and as a captain in 2024, announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the prestigious cup for the country on June 29.

Apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli and the star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also announced their retirement from T20I cricket. Kohli played a match-defining knock of 76 runs in the final to help India beat South Africa by seven runs and win the Player of the Match award.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah's stellar performance throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament award. Bumrah managed 15 wickets in the tournament. The Indian will be seen in action in the T20I series on the Zimbabwe tour this month.
