Former cricketer Yograj Singh has made a bold statement regarding Shubman Gill’s batting performance during the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston. Yograj revealed that his son, Yuvraj Singh, played a key role in mentoring Gill and also praised Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Shubman Gill delivered a stunning performance with the bat, scoring 269 runs off 387 balls in India’s first innings. He showcased his class and temperament while breaking records. Gill also surpassed Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli to register the highest individual Test score by an Indian in England.
The right-handed batter also became the sixth Indian to score over 250 runs in a Test innings. He now holds the record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket.
Yuvraj Singh Personally Coached Shubman Gill - Yograj Singh
Speaking to ANI, Yograj Singh credited his son Yuvraj Singh for mentoring Shubman Gill and helping him with batting. Yograj also lauded Gautam Gambhir for his coaching approach. He stated that Indian players can achieve records with guidance.
"Yuvraj Singh personally coached Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill is a great player... One should learn from Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir about how to coach players. If Brian Lara can score 500 runs, why can't we?" Yograj said (via Sporting News).
Gill became the first Indian captain to score a double century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). He joined Virat Kohli as the only other Indian captain to achieve a double hundred outside the subcontinent.
Gill scored 147 in the opening match of the series. However, India couldn’t secure the victory despite his heroics with the bat. England successfully chased 371 runs in the final innings, clinching a 1-0 lead in the series.
I Worked on a Few Things Before the Series - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill entered the England series with criticism for his inconsistent Test performances abroad, especially in SENA countries. However, he has silenced his critics with a stellar showing, scoring his seventh Test century and fourth against England during the ongoing Edgbaston Test.
After his double century on Day 2, Gill revealed that he had made key adjustments to his technique ahead of the series. Speaking to the broadcasters after play, he said that the changes he implemented have started to pay off, helping him succeed in challenging overseas conditions.
"I worked on a few things before the series I thought were important for me going into Test cricket, and looking at the results, those things are working for me," Gill said (via ESPN Cricinfo).
India Dominate with Bat and Ball on Day 2 at Edgbaston
India made the most of Day 2 in the second Test at Edgbaston. Resuming at their overnight score of 310/5, India posted a commanding total of 587. The visitors avoided a lower-order collapse, unlike their showing in the previous Test at Leeds.
With a big score on the board, India’s bowlers picked up quick wickets. Akash Deep, playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah, removed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope on successive deliveries in the third over. Duckett was caught at third slip by Gill, while Pope was taken at second slip.
Mohammed Siraj then dismissed Zak Crawley for 19, leaving England reeling at 25/3. Joe Root and Harry Brook guided England to 77/3 by stumps, preventing further damage. However, the hosts remain under pressure heading into Day 3.
