Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has showered praise on Jasprit Bumrah for his outstanding effort on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Headingley. However, Shastri raised concerns over the lack of assistance from the rest of the Indian pace attack in England's first innings of the series opener.

Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball in Leeds on Saturday, June 21. He provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Zak Crawley in the first over. Bumrah later dismissed Ben Duckett to shift momentum back in India’s favour. He picked up the key wicket of Joe Root just before the end of play on Day 2.

Ravi Shastri Raises Concern Over Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload in England

Speaking to Sky Cricket after Day 2 of the Headingley Test, Ravi Shastri said that Jasprit Bumrah cannot be expected to carry the bowling workload alone. Shastri hoped that one of the other bowlers would deliver on the third day.

"There's a big difference in levels. The concern is Bumrah and what his workload will be as the series progresses, because he is the one man who is expected to pick wickets every spell he bowls," Shastri said. "I just hope someone at the other end puts their hands up."

Bumrah finished the day with impressive figures of 3 for 48 in 13 overs. He picked up all three English wickets to fall during the day. In contrast, the rest of India's pace attack struggled, conceding a total of 154 runs without taking a single wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah Doesn’t Give You an Inch in the Nets - Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri said that Jasprit Bumrah is operating at the peak of his powers. He added that Bumrah lifts his game, whether in practice or in matches, especially against top players. Shastri said that Bumrah has the hunger to prove he’s the world’s best fast bowler.

“When you say they're at their absolute peak, they can make the ball talk. And with him, you literally see that happening. Even in that setup with Joe Root, he just raises the bar. He's that kind of competitor," Shastri said.

"I’ve seen him in the nets, when Rohit Sharma or Kohli or any of the top guys come out to bat, he raises his level. He doesn’t give you an inch in the nets, and it’s the same out in the middle. Today, he might have got Root for the tenth time, for all you know, but it just shows he’s always ready for a scrap. He knows he’s the number one fast bowler in the world and he wants to prove it,” he added.
