Former New Zealand batter Ross Taylor has reacted to the biggest controversy involving Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. Shreyas Iyer’s shocking exclusion from India’s squad for the upcoming continental tournament has shocked the entire cricket world.
Despite smashing over 600 runs for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 and playing a key role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, apart from excelling for Mumbai in the domestic season across the formats, the right-handed batter was overlooked for the Asia Cup 2025.
Ross Taylor reacts to Shreyas Iyer’s shocking Asia Cup 2025 snub
The Indian selectors’ move baffled fans and experts across the cricket world. However, Ross Taylor has a different take on the much-debated snub. The New Zealander called Iyer’s snub a reflection of India’s incredible depth, saying if a player of the Mumbaiker’s stature can be left out, then the bench strength must be nothing short of world-class.
Ross Taylor was quoted as saying by PTI, “I haven’t seen the side yet, so I can’t say. (But) when you can leave that type of quality out, you’ve got to be pretty comfortable with the depth of your squad.”
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill was recalled to India’s T20I side after one year, and he was even named the vice-captain, grooming him for the captaincy. Gill’s inclusion meant Sanju Samson will be dropped to the middle-order spot, making no space for Shreyas Iyer.
Samson’s recent form and added value as the wicketkeeper tilted the balance in his favor, leaving Iyer disappointed. Adding to the drama, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mohammed Siraj were also left out, proving just how fierce the competition has become in the T20I team.
Vijay Dahiya calls Shreyas Iyer unlucky after Asia Cup 2025 snub
On the other hand, former Indian wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya also reacted to Shreyas Iyer’s Asia Cup 2025 snub. He feels Iyer was just unlucky, especially after the kind of performances he delivered. Dahiya believes that such heartbreaks are almost unavoidable in a side packed with talented players.
India’s bench strength has reached a level where even proven performers struggle to find a place. The former cricketer said that some players will always find themselves on the sidelines who could easily walk into most international line-ups.
Vijay Dahiya was quoted as saying by PTI: “Once the team is picked, we cannot say much about it. Whenever any Indian team is picked, some players will always miss out. With the bench strength we have, we can field two separate teams, but some players will always be left out.”
He further added, “But nothing much can be changed now, as he is not even part of the reserves as well. But yes, the way he has performed has made everyone think that he is missing.”

Vijay Dahiya backs India as hot favorites for the Asia Cup 2025
The former wicketkeeper also feels India is a clear favorite for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. He feels that only an off day or a special performance from the opposition could derail India’s campaign.
Dahiya signed off by saying, “There is not much threat in the Asia Cup for India, but T20 is a format that changes quickly. India will lose only if we have a bad day or someone plays exceptional cricket.”
