Another unique situation for the national team selectors is that the two-match Test series against New Zealand is scheduled as India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, the team is still in contention for a spot in the final of the ongoing cycle Test Championship.

With the possibility of winning two major titles, the selectors were forced to make multiple permutations and combinations in the newly selected Test squad for the away Test matches against New Zealand. Surprisingly, selectors bypassed spinner Manav Suthar and fast bowler Gurnoor Brar for the Test side.

Experienced bowlers are selected over the emerging talents for the Tests vs New Zealand

While experienced candidates like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav have been named for the Tests, the absence of Gurnoor and Manav raises questions. Under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir, the Indian team management has gained a reputation for promoting fresh talent.

The squad for the New Zealand Tests is not aligning with the well-established concept. Why did the selectors snub Gurnoor Brar and Manav Suthar from the Test selections? According to media reports, Gurnoor and Manav were left out of the Tests as part of the management's long-term vision; both of the bowlers are being preserved for future endeavours.

Why did the selectors leave out Manav Suthar and Gurnoor Brar from the Test team?

The Hindu reported that Manav Suthar has been left out as the Indian team management wants to keep him for the next Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Suthar, who took 7, 10, and 6 wickets against Afghanistan and in two Tests against Sri Lanka, respectively, is likely to take a crucial role in the Tests in the future. The series against Australia will be crucial for India if they want to keep themselves in the race for the Test mace.

At this point, to remain in contention for a spot in the final, the Shubman Gill-led team needs to win at least 6 matches in seven. From the New Zealand series, every match in the Whites is going to be a must-win game. Going forward, the team management will require a full-fledged squad to conquer the upcoming fixtures.

By doing shuffles, the workloads of the players are expected to be managed well. The core reason behind leaving Gurnoor Brar out is similar to Manav Suthar's exclusion. Gurnoor Brar has so far played 9 ODIs for India, taking 14 wickets, and is yet to get his Test cap.

Selectors are preserving Gurnoor Brar for the 2027 ODI World Cup

As the team management is shaping the teams for two tournaments, WTC and the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors are reportedly fixing roles for every individual. Brar is already a part of India's ODI setup, and he is likely to continue in this particular format ahead.

Instead of fitting him into multiple formats, the management is trying to streamline all of their available talents according to their style of playing the game. According to media reports, Gurnoor Brar is in India's long-term plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
