The veteran pacer bowled long spells, claimed 37 wickets in the Ranji Trophy, and repeatedly stated that he was fully fit. According to a Sportstar report, Mohammed Shami is no longer part of India's long-term plans. The report claimed the selectors have already identified a pool of 15 young fast bowlers across formats who will lead India's pace attack over the next few years.
Notably, the report added that the selectors are already planning for the next World Test Championship cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup. They do not intend to extend the careers of senior pacers, wanting to give young bowlers regular international exposure and prepare them for the future.
Mohammed Siraj Set to Take on Bigger Role Alongside Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah remains India's premier fast bowler across all formats. He has been named in the squad for the Sri Lanka Test series, but his participation depends on clearing fitness tests. The team management also continues to manage his workload carefully.
Bumrah cannot play every Test match, and the selectors want to build a dependable pace attack around him. According to Sportstar, the transition has already started under chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with the focus firmly on developing younger fast bowlers.
With Mohammed Shami seemingly out of the picture, Mohammed Siraj is expected to take on greater responsibility. The report also stated that the selectors believe "looking back would only delay the inevitable," as they remain committed to backing youth over experience.
Sri Lanka Squad Selection Sparks Fresh Debate
