Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons urged his batters to convert good starts into big scores after the tourists were bowled out for 234 against West Indies on the first day of the second Test in St Lucia on Saturday.

Opener Tamim Iqbal (46) and Liton Das (53) made some important contributions but failed to score big. Najmul Hossain Shanto (26), Anamul Haque (23) and Shoriful Islam (26) down the batting order added some runs to post a sizeable score on the board.

Jayden Seales (3/53), Alzarri Joseph (3/50), Anderson Phillip (2/30) and Kyle Mayers (2/35) were amongst the wicket-takers for the host. The only solace for Bangladesh would be a better performance in contrast to getting all out for 103 in the first Test on Day 1.

We just need to bat longer: Jamie Siddons

Siddons said their batters need to extend their stay at the crease and play a big inning to post a humongous score on the board. The Australian coach believes scoring in the range of 40-50 won’t be enough for the Tigers to win games.

I thought we were a lot more patient today and left the ball well, which we worked on over the last week since the first Test where I thought we played at too many balls. They bowled really well today and we didn’t bat as long as we would’ve liked. 230 is not enough on that wicket,” Siddons said after the first day’s play.

“We just need to bat longer. In Test cricket, you got to bat on for a long time. You got to be there at the end of the day and then we got to be batting on tomorrow. We are failing to do that at the moment. We are getting blokes that look more comfortable with the bounce that you get over here. Today I thought Tamim, Liton looked fantastic but the 50s and 40s are not going to give you enough runs. So those sorts of players need to go on when they get their start.

”Couple of the younger players looked really impressive but again got out. Probably a couple of umpiring decisions looked close but didn’t go our way. So 230, we’re struggling at the moment,” he added.

West Indies were 67 for no loss at the closing of the first day with skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (30*) and John Campbell (32) batting for the hosts, who are trailing by 167 runs.
