Security in Navi Mumbai has been tightened ahead of the last two matches of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 after a shocking incident in Indore involving two Australian players. Mumbai will host the big semifinal between India and Australia on Thursday (October 30) and the grand final on Sunday (November 1) at the DY Patil Stadium.
The shocking incident in Indore happened on October 23, when two Australian cricketers went out from their hotel to a nearby café. During their visit, the women cricketers were reportedly harassed and “inappropriately touched” by a man in Indore.
The Australian women’s cricket team management immediately informed the police and registered an FIR under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking). After a six-hour search, the accused, named Aqueel Sheikh, was caught by the Madhya Pradesh police.
Navi Mumbai Police on high alert after Indore incident
This incident has caused serious concern among players and officials, leading to stronger safety arrangements for the remaining matches of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.

Notably, police in Indore have arrested Aqeel. He has been remanded for two days by the MIG Police Station. They revealed Aqeel had a history of criminal charges in the past and confirmed charges under Sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Now, in Navi Mumbai, the security has been significantly increased around the DY Patil Stadium, hotels, and public areas. Special women security teams, police, plainclothes officers, and CCTV surveillance have been deployed to ensure women players’ safety.
For the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 semifinal and the final in Mumbai, entry points to the DY Patil Stadium will have strict checks, and drone cameras will keep an eye on the area. Police patrols will also continue throughout the day and night.
Navi Mumbai police deploy 600 personnel to protect players amid ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 safety concerns
Officials have said that player safety is their top priority and that all steps are being taken to prevent any repeat of the Indore incident.
A senior police officer in Maharashtra Police in Navi Mumbai was quoted as saying by India Today, “Since the very first day, that is, from October 18th, when practice started here, we have deployed guards at all the hotels where the women players are staying.”
He further revealed, “Apart from that, whenever the team travels from the stadium to the hotel or vice versa, we provide them with an escort. Here on the ground, we have deployed approximately 600 personnel, comprising 75 officers and the remainder as police constables. In addition, if any player wants to go out, they must inform us, and we provide them with protection as well.”

Navi Mumbai police urge cricketers to inform before leaving hotels
The police officer has promised round-the-clock security for all players and asked them to always inform the police before stepping out of their hotels. He explained that while safety measures were already in place, problems arise when players go out without informing them.
He signed off by saying, “After learning about the incident, actually, we were already taking precautions from the beginning, but sometimes what happens is that players go out without informing the police, and that creates a problem. If they inform us beforehand, we ensure their protection.”
