Left-handed batter Tilak Varma delivered an exceptional performance with the bat in the second T20I of the five-match series between India and England. Varma achieved a significant milestone by topping the list for most runs scored by a batter between dismissals in T20 internationals worldwide.
India opted to field first after winning the toss in Chennai on Saturday, January 25. The hosts restricted England to 165/9, with Jos Buttler top-scoring with 45 off 30 balls. India's batting lineup struggled as key players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav failed to score more than 15 runs.
Batting at number three, Tilak Varma anchored the chase with a brilliant unbeaten 72 runs off 55 balls. The southpaw smashed four fours and five sixes. Washington Sundar added a crucial 26 off 19 balls, while Ravi Bishnoi's quick nine runs at the end helped India secure a two-wicket victory in the final over.
Tilak Varma Set New Record for the Most Runs Scored Between Dismissals
Tilak Varma has set a new record for the most runs scored between dismissals in T20 internationals. He leads the chart with an unbeaten 318 runs in the 2024/25 season. Mark Chapman follows with 271 runs in 2023, Shreyas Iyer with 240 runs in 2022, and Aaron Finch, who scored 240 runs in 2018.
The 22-year-old batter has been in exceptional form in his last four T20I innings, recording scores of 107*, 120*, 19*, and 72*. He scored back-to-back centuries in South Africa to cement his place in the Indian T20I side.

Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif praised Tilak Varma for his skills, technique, and consistency. Aakash Chopra said that Varma exhibited game awareness, temperament, and composure in controlling the run-chase. Meanwhile, Harsha Bhogle described Varma as one of the brightest young stars in Indian cricket.

The third T20I match between India and England will be played at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Jan 28, Tuesday. Shivam Dube and Ramandeep will join the team in place of Rinku Singha and Nitish Kumar Reddy. The hosts will be aiming to complete the series victory in the upcoming match.
