India and New Zealand are set to take on each other in the ICC World Test Championship final. The match is set to commence today (June 18) at The Rose Bowl Cricket Stadium in Southampton, England. The ICC event has become one of the most prominent matches of this year since it will lead way for the first-ever champions of the World Test Championship.

India and New Zealand qualified for the final of ICC World Test Championship after finishing on the 1st and 2nd spot respectively in the points table of ICC World Test Championship tournament. When we take a look at ICC events, India is not very successful against New Zealand in the past. In the last five clashes between India and New Zealand in ICC events, India has lost every game. India last faced New Zealand in an ICC event during the 2nd Test in February-March 2020. The Test series was part of the ICC World Test Championship. India were bowled out for 242 in the first innings with Prithvi Shaw (54), Cheteshwar Pujara (54), and Hanuma Vihari (55) managing half-centuries.

The home team New Zealand were bowled out for just 235 after suffering a batting collapse towards the end. However, the Kiwis bounced back by bowling out India for just 124 in the 2nd innings. Batting in the 2nd innings, New Zealand comfortably managed to chase the 132-run target and won the match by 7 wickets.

Before the 2nd Test, India also lost the first Test against New Zealand in ICC World Test Championship. New Zealand bowled out India for just 165 in the first innings, with 4-wickets hauls by Tim Southee and Kylie Jamieson. Later, they put up 348 on the scoreboard before getting all-out.

Trailing by 183 runs, India were bowled out for 191 with only Mayank Agarwal (58) smashing a half-century. A 9-run-target was a piece of cake for New Zealand and they comfortably won the match by 10 wickets.\

India also lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of ICC ODI World Cup 2019. In the match, New Zealand scored 239-8 batting first with the fifties by captain Kane Williamson (67) and Ross Taylor (74). Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a brilliant spell for India picking 3 wickets. Due to rain, the 2nd innings was played on next day.

India’s top order collapsed against New Zealand’s pace attack. The top three batsmen KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli lost their wickets after scoring just 1 run each. Being 92-6 in 30.3 overs, India had almost lost the plot in the match.

However, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja managed an incredible partnership of 116 runs and kept the hopes alive for India. However, when both of them lost their wickets during the death overs, India remained short of 18 runs in the end and lost the match.

Before ICC ODI World Cup 2019, India and New Zealand locked horns in an ICC event during the T20I World Cup 2016. Both the teams played against each other in the Super 10 stage of group 2. New Zealand could only reach a low total of 126-7 while batting first. Corey Anderson was the team’s highest run-scorer with 34 runs.

However, the Kiwis managed to defend their low total with a brilliant piece of bowling. India lost their first 5 wickets with just 39 runs on the scoreboard. Mitchell Santner picked 4 wickets while Ish Sodhi picked 3 wickets to bowl out India for just 79 in 18.1 overs. India lost the match by 47 runs.

India and New Zealand faced each other in another ICC event long back in 2007 during the first edition of the T20I World Cup. In the match, New Zealand batted first and scored a mammoth 190-10 in 20 overs. Brendon McCullum (45) and Craig McMillan (44) were the top two highest run-scorers for New Zealand.

For India, openers Gautam Gambhir (51) and Virender Sehwag (40) played crucial knocks but other batsmen could not follow the momentum. Daniel Vettori scalped 4 wickets as India could only reach 180-9 at the end of 20 overs. Inda lost the match by 10 runs.
