After Rohit Sharma departed from the Test matches, the Board of Control for Cricket faced a new challenge. With the urge to find a new captain for Test cricket, BCCI is looking for a young player to lead the Indian side in Test cricket. As of now, according to the reports, Shubman Gill is the front-runner in the Test captaincy race.
In the current Indian Test squad, there are not many experienced players except Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja. From the young guns in Test cricket, Gill has an edge over becoming the successor of Rohit Sharma.
In between the chaos in the Indian Test team, Michael Vaughan again comes up with a unique piece of advice for the BCCI. The former England skipper wants BCCI to take a U-turn and pick Virat Kohli as Indian Test captain again for the England tour. He also advised the Indian team to elect Gill as vice-captain for the tour.
Michael Vaughan hails Virat Kohli
“If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour .. #India,” Michael Vaughan wrote on his X handle.

Some Indian experts also suggest selectors groom Gill before the big Test series, and there is also speculation that Kohli’s future in the red-ball format is uncertain, as he is considering retirement from Test cricket.
BCCI is currently engaged in a conversation with Kohli to reconsider his decision, as they don’t want the two veteran Indian players to retire from the red-ball format at the same time and also before the big Test series against England in England.
Virat Kohli’s Test record as captain
Virat Kohli is one of the best Indian captains in Indian Test history. He won some historic matches in overseas conditions and started dominating in the red-ball format outside of home soil. Kohli won 40 Test matches out of 68 matches with a fabulous winning percentage of 58.82.
Kohli was the first Indian skipper to win a Test series against Australia in Australia. In his captaincy days, the ace batter scored four double centuries in four consecutive red-ball series and broke the records of greats like Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid.
Kohli’s last outing in Test cricket was in Border Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where the Indian team was thrashed by Australia 3-1. Kohli failed to prove himself in the Test series as he was trapped again outside off-stump ball.
The right-handed batter is going through a rough patch in his Test career. In 2024, his test average was just 24.52, and he scored just 417 runs in 19 innings with just one century and one half-century. After 2019, his Test average is below 30 every year except 2023.
Kohli quits Test Cricket
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test Cricket. He will now only be playing in the IPL and the ODI format for India. He had already announced his international retirement from T20Is after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
