Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma said goodbye to Test cricket
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the longest format of the game in May, just before the India tour of England 2025.
They both took to Instagram to announce their decision to retire from Test cricket. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on May 7, 2025, and a few days later, on May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli also confirmed that he would be moving away from the format.
Rohit scored 4301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57 in his Test career and had a decent run as the skipper.
On the other hand, Kohli played 123 Test matches in his career and scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. Virat Kohli had an exceptional run as the Test captain and put himself on the list of the greatest Test skippers of all time.
The retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has left a big void in the Indian team, and an inexperienced team under the leadership of Shubman Gill will be taking on the England National Cricket Team in the five-match Test series.
Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests - Yograj Singh
Meanwhile, Yograj Singh is not happy with Rohit and Kohli retiring from Test cricket early. He opined that the duo should have continued to play for five more years, and their sudden retirements have put Shubman Gill under pressure.
"Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests. I told Rohit to get up at 5 AM and run for 20 km to keep himself fit. Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played," Yograj told InsideSport.
"They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. The baton has not been passed, it has been thrown to Gill," he added.
Even when Yuvraj was retiring... - Yograj Singh
Yograj Singh further revealed that he was also disappointed when his son Yuvraj Singh retired from international cricket and wanted him to continue for a few more years. He said:
"Even when Yuvraj was retiring I promised him that I will help him become India captain and that we will throw everybody out but he quit."
