Yograj Singh, father of ex-India star Yuvraj Singh, has urged head coach Gautam Gambhir and the management to focus on grooming bowlers into all-rounders. The former cricketer said that Jasprit Bumrah and other lower-order players should spend 1-2 hours batting in the nets daily after practice sessions.
India, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, managed to draw the five-Test series in England 2-2. They ended the series with a six-run victory at The Oval. Before the England tour, India had endured defeats in their previous Test assignments, suffering a 0-3 loss to New Zealand and a 1-3 defeat against Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah Can Be Groomed Into a Very Good All-Rounder - Yograj Singh
In an interview with InsideSport, Yograj Singh stated that Kapil Dev transformed into one of the greatest all-rounders despite starting his career batting at No. 11. Yograj added that the current team, including Jasprit Bumrah, should not be labeled as tail-enders.
“The problem with the Indian squad, at the moment, is that we are not looking to make the bowlers into all-rounders. Kapil Dev was never given batting in the nets. I was yelling at the top of my voice, ‘Kapil ko batting karao'. At that time, he used to come in at No.11, score 70-80 runs, so no one was looking ahead," Yograj Singh told InsideSport.
“Nowadays, Jasprit Bumrah and all these bowlers, what you call them tail enders, I don't. You are not looking ahead that they can be groomed into very, very good all-rounders. If you work with them, make them bat in the nets for 1-2 hours daily after the session, I think that could be the best thing that could happen,” he added.
India’s Lower Order Under Scrutiny During England Series
India’s lower order faced scrutiny during the England series. The Men in Blue collapsed in the run chase during the third Test at Lord’s. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj tried to provide resistance alongside Ravindra Jadeja, but the visitors failed to cross the finish line.
The issues had surfaced earlier in the series as well. India suffered two batting collapses in the first Test at Leeds, which dented their chances. The team management was forced to alter the lineup and back batting depth to avoid similar setbacks.
Akash Deep, who came in as a nightwatchman, stunned the opposition by scoring 66 in the second innings of the series finale at The Oval. His knock shifted the momentum back in India’s favor, and the lower order delivered when the team needed it most.
India Could Have Won 5-0 If Arshdeep Was There - Yograj Singh
Yograj Singh said that India missed a chance to win the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. He stated that the series could have ended in a 5-0 whitewash if Arshdeep Singh had been included in the playing XI.
“Even in England, we could have won 5-0 if Arshdeep was there in the squad. We could have won the series 3-2, had we not lost at Lord's by 21 runs. They (the tail-enders) could not win it, they could not achieve it, because we never give them a chance with the bat.”
Arshdeep received his first call-up to India’s red-ball squad but never got the chance to debut. He was initially left out of the XI and later sidelined by injury. India began the series with a pace attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj.
Akash Deep was included in the XI when Bumrah was rested for workload management. Anshul Kamboj was brought in as a late replacement midway through the tour and went on to make his debut in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
Jasprit Bumrah will now be seen in action in the Asia Cup 2025.
