Former India batsman Yusuf Pathan has landed in legal trouble due to a residential plot in his hometown, Vadodara.

The cricketer-turned-politician has been declared an encroacher by the Gujarat High Court after rejecting his petition challenging a notice from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC).

Yusuf Pathan defied the orders

The court has also ordered the VMC to remove the encroachments. The ruling was delivered by a single bench of Justice Mauna Bhatt. The saga began way back in 2012 when Yusuf Pathan decided to buy an open residential plot next to his Tandalja bungalow, citing security concerns for himself and his family due to his status as an international cricketer.

The VMC did acknowledge the request but eventually rejected it in 2014. However, Yusuf Pathan defied the orders from the civic authorities and has continued to occupy the property illegally. 10 years later, in 2014, the VMC issued a notice to the former cricketer, instructing him to vacate the plot owned by the government. In response, Yusuf Pathan decided to approach the court.

'Yusuf Pathan has a greater responsibility'

In the verdict, Justice Bhatt highlighted that Yusuf Pathan has a greater responsibility to comply with the law since he is a public figure. Justice Bhatt also said that offering leniency to someone because of status would set a dangerous precedent.

"As a national representative and public figure, Pathan has a greater responsibility to comply with the law," said Justice Bhatt.

"Celebrities, because of their visibility and influence, shape public behaviour and societal values. Allowing them concessions despite violating regulations undermines public trust in the judicial system and sets a dangerous precedent."

Yusuf Pathan won World Cups with India

Yusuf Pathan was a part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. He played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is between 2007 and 2012 for the Men in Blue.

A hard-hitting middle-order batsman and a handy spinner, Pathan scored 810 runs in ODIs with the help of two centuries. He also picked up 33 wickets in the 50-over format. In T20Is, Pathan scored 236 runs at a strike rate of 146.58 in addition to taking 13 wickets.
