Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir criticized the concept of underrating players, emphasizing that nothing is truly underrated. Gambhir questioned the lack of recognition for Yuvraj Singh, despite winning the Man of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup.
Media attention has intensified around the iconic match-winning six by MS Dhoni that helped the team secure a win in the final. Gambhir didn’t receive the deserved recognition for his impactful 97 runs against Sri Lanka, despite the challenge of losing early wickets.
Dhoni was awarded Man of the Match for his unbeaten 91 runs off 79 balls at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Indian cricket team successfully chased down a 275-run target, securing their second title in the 50-over event with a six-wicket win against Sri Lanka.
Nothing Is Underrated – Gautam Gambhir
In a video shared by ANI on X, Gautam Gambhir asserted that broadcasters should not function as PR machinery and need to be fair to every player in the dressing room. He emphasized the potential impact of media coverage on a player’s image.”
“When these people tag something as underrated, it’s those very individuals who undershow, undervalue, and underappreciate. Nothing is underrated. Tell me, how many people talk about a player who was the Man of the Tournament in 2011? Probably because he doesn’t have a good PR agency.
“A broadcaster can never be a PR machinery. A broadcaster needs to be fair to everyone sitting in that dressing room. If I have a machinery, and I have to choose between two people, and I show one for 2 hours and 50 minutes and the other for 10 minutes, the person with 2 hours and 50 minutes becomes a brand,” Gambhir said.
Yuvraj Singh earned the Player of the Tournament award for his outstanding performance in India’s successful 2021 campaign. He scored 362 runs in 8 innings at an impressive average of 90.50, which included a century and four fifties. Additionally, Yuvraj showcased his bowling skills by taking 15 wickets at an average of 25.13 and an economy rate of 5.03.
