Former Indian batter Yuvraj Singh expressed his desire to take over the coaching or mentor role. He said that he wants to give it back to cricket and help the young players to tackle the challenges both technically as well as mentally.
Whenever there is talk of Indian cricket, it is hard to sideline Yuvraj Singh. The all-rounder has been an incredible servant for the nation in cricket and has played a huge role in making the team a great force in the world of cricket.
In today’s era when Indian batters fail to handle the pressure, one name that comes to mind of many is Yuvraj Singh. The all-rounder has played great innings for the team in high-pressure games and has guided them to many famous wins in some of the big tournaments.
Yuvraj Singh was the main architect behind India’s two World Cups in 2007 and 2011. In the ODI World Cup, he won the Player of the Tournament as he contributed equally well with both bat and ball. His presence in Indian cricket was a huge factor for the team and it’s fair to say that still there is no one like him.
Yuvraj Singh, however, can return to the Indian setup or cricket as he hinted about taking up a mentor’s role. He said that when his kids are settled he will try to help young players to get better.
Yuvraj Singh believes that Indian players feel a lot of mental pressure in the big comes and he hopes to work on this with young players. Speaking while inaugurating ‘Yuvraj Centres of Excellence’ at Merlin Rise, he explained (as quoted by PTI):
“Mentoring is something I love to do. In the coming years, when my kids are settled, I want to give back to cricket and help the young guys get better. I think we face a lot of mental challenges in big tournaments. I believe in the mental aspect, I can come in and work with these guys in the future.
“I feel that I can contribute a lot, especially in the middle order. I have the confidence to work with the young guys, addressing not only their technique but also the mental challenges that come with cricket.”
“I asked Mr Ashish Nehra (Gujarat Titans) for a job, but he declined it – Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh further added that he will pick up the coaching role once his kids start going to school. He expressed his keenness to coach any of the IPL teams. Before revealing he contacted Ashish Nehra for a role in Gujarat Titans but the head coach of the team declined.
Yuvraj Singh admitted that he is looking up for the position and is hopeful for serving cricket again. He elaborated:
“Let’s see what opportunities I get, but my priority is my kids right now. Once they start school, I will have more time. so I can pick up (coaching). I love working with the young guys, especially my state boys, and I feel that mentoring is something that I would love to do, and, to be part of one of the IPL teams, I’m looking at.
“I asked Mr Ashish Nehra (Gujarat Titans) for a job, but he declined it. So, let’s see where else I can get a position, but at the moment, I have to balance. So, definitely, in the coming years, I want to give back to cricket and help the young guys get better. I can contribute a lot.”
Yuvraj Singh has groomed a lot of youngsters. The likes of Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and others have been trained by him.
Overall in his career, Yuvraj Singh scored 11,778 runs to go with 17 centuries. He was no mug with the ball as he took a total of 148 wickets in all three formats.
