Zimbabwe batter Milton Shumba has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against India with a right hamstring injury. Innocent Kaia has been included as his replacement ahead of the series opener, which is scheduled to take place at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, July 23.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza will hope to make the most of home conditions in the three-match series. The remaining matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the same venue. Milton Shumba Ruled Out After Hamstring Injury
Zimbabwe have suffered a major setback, with Milton Shumba ruled out due to a right hamstring injury. Medical scans on Tuesday confirmed the severity of the injury, forcing the 25-year-old Milton Shumba to miss the entire series.
Milton Shumba had featured in all three matches against Bangladesh, his first appearances in the format since 2022. Notably, the left-handed batter Milton Shumba showed encouraging signs during the series before picking up the injury during training ahead of the India series.
The team management had hoped his left-handed batting would strengthen the lineup and provide another option against India's spin attack. Milton Shumba's absence is a significant setback before the opening match.
Innocent Kaia Returns as Replacement
Zimbabwe Cricket has named experienced top-order batter Innocent Kaia as Shumba's replacement. Kaia has already joined the squad in Harare and is taking part in the team's final preparations ahead of the first T20I.
He returns to the national T20I side after a lengthy absence. The batter last played for the national cricket team in the format in July 2024 against India at the Harare Sports Club. Kaia will face the same opposition at the same venue.
The experienced batter will now look to make the most of his unexpected recall. Zimbabwe will hope Kaia adds stability at the top of the order and helps fill the void left by Shumba's injury.
Zimbabwe Aim to Challenge India at Home
During the recent series against Bangladesh, Brian Bennett scored 102 runs in three matches, while Dion Myers scored 97. Although Zimbabwe lost the series decider in the final over, the team built confidence after an impressive ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
The bowling attack also impressed during the Bangladesh series. Richard Ngarava finished as the leading wicket-taker with eight wickets in three matches, while Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans claimed four wickets each.
Zimbabwe are expected to use the short-ball tactic that troubled India during their recent T20I series against England. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, meanwhile, will look to make the most of familiar home conditions as both teams meet in all three matches at the Harare Sports Club.
The hosts have built good momentum in recent weeks and should make India work hard for every run and wicket. However, India's batting depth and overall quality give them the edge. The Shreyas Iyer-led team will win the first T20I and open the series with a 1-0 lead.
