10 Cricketers Who Are Hits In International T20s But Flopped In IPL; IPL started around 12 years back, and since then, it has turned out to be one of the biggest cricket tournaments across the world apart from the World Cups and attract billions of viewers. Numerous players actively play in both IPL and International games.

All the international stars, over the years, bagged million-dollar deals. But only a few have managed to keep their performance uniform on both stages while other players failed to deliver the merits in IPL despite shinning for the country. We figured out ten such players, who were unable to perform in IPL but played exceptionally well for the national team at the highest level.

10. Thisara Perera:

Thisara Perera has been a reliable all-rounder for Sri Lanka over the years. Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate the same in IPL even after getting so many chances. He played 79 International games for Sri Lanka, where he has scalped 51 wickets and scored 1169 runs at an average of 23.

His attacking batting and more than useful bowling caught the attention of Chennai Super Kings in the 2010 auctions before subsequently moving onto Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Mumbai Indians. He was later snapped by Hyderabad for USD 675,000 at the 2013 auction in Chennai, following some heavy bidding.

He claimed 19 wickets from 16 matches for SRH in the Indian Premier League 2013. He was purchased by Kings XI Punjab for 16 million in 2014 but was unavailable to play that season. Later, he played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016, which was his last appearance in IPL. In IPL, he has amassed only 422 runs off 37 games and picked 31 wickets at an economy of 8.7 which is quite below par considering his returns for Sri Lanka in the shorter formats.

9. Martin Guptill:

The opening batsman of New Zealand, Martin Guptill can destroy any bowling unit on any given day. He has got the calibre to change the complexion of the game with ease, but unfortunately, he never had a good season under his belt in Indian Premier League.

His ability to smash the ball neatly helped him to find a place in IPL’s Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad,  CPL’s Guyana Amazon Warriors as well as St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, and BBL’s Sydney Thunder. He’s also played in the English county for Derbyshire and more recently Lancashire.

He had decent success in all the franchise tournaments alongside his national team New Zealand, but unfortunately, he never gave good returns to his IPL franchises. He scored 2436 runs for New Zealand in 83 games at an average of 33.28. But, in IPL, he has scored only 270 runs in 13 games which is not upto his skills.

8. Angelo Mathews:

The right-handed all-rounder from Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews is considered as one of the modern-day greats. Across the formats, he has made a mark of his own by performing consistently for the team. Unfortunately, Mathews couldn’t live upto the expectations for his IPL franchises.

He started his career for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 and then was picked up by now-defunct Pune Warriors India in 2014, where he was also the captain. However, his form was not inspiring, and the team too struggled. In 2017, he was drafted in by the Delhi franchise. He also captained them, but he never quite set the stage on fire.

In 46 matches, Mathews has scored 692 runs at an average of 23.86 and with a strike rate of 126.27. With the ball too, he did not leave any impact. With the ball, the veteran all-rounder managed to scalp only 27 wickets with an economy of 8.06 and average of 37.88. However, for Sri Lanka, he has scored 1055 runs and picked 37 wickets in the shortest format.

7. Colin de Grandhomme:

Yet another all-rounder, Colin de Grandhomme failed to perform in Indian Premier League despite proving to be a utility player at the international level. He has been a useful element for Kane Williamson with both bat and ball whenever he donned the New Zealand jersey. However, it was not the same during his stints with IPL franchises.

He was called up by Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Andre Russell. Though he played for the most of the season, de Grandhomme got minimal opportunities with bat and ball. His standout performance was 3/4 on a seamer-friendly wicket at Eden Gardens against Bangalore.

Later, he was picked up by Bangalore for INR 2.2 crore. The shift didn’t change his fortunes as he didn’t start the season, and when he did, the chances were minimal. In total, he scored 303 runs off 21 games and picked six wickets, in which, four came from a single match. However, for New Zealand, stats prove that he is a utility cricketer. He scored at an average of 19.88 and picked ten wickets.

6. Ravi Bopara:

Ravi Bopara is one of the stalwarts when it comes to the shortest format of the game. Though he delivered goods for England at the international level, Bopara failed to replicate the same for his IPL franchises. Kings XI Punjab bought Bopara during the 2009 auction, but like his international career, he was nowhere close to what people expected of him.

Later, he moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad, but inconsistency followed him and was never a permanent starter for any of his teams. As a batsman, in 24 matches, he scored only 531 runs, at an average of 29.50, and with a strike rate of 117.21. With the ball, he picked up only 11 wickets and gave away runs at an economy of 8.50. However, for England, he has amassed 711 runs in 34 innings at a good strike-rate and picked 16 wickets.

5. Marcus Stoinis:

The all-rounder from Australia always entered into the tournament with high expectations but unfortunately, never delivered enough goods for his franchises. On the contrary, he had notable performances for the Baggy Greens in the limited-overs.

Signed by the Delhi franchise in 2015, he didn’t feature in any matches and was later bought by Kings XI Punjab in the subsequent auctions. Although his international record was on the upward curve, it didn’t translate into notable performances for Kings XI Punjab.

In 2018, KXIP used the Right-to-match card to bag his services once again. However, it didn’t work, which prompted them to trade him to RCB. Unfortunately, he failed to perform for RCB as well. So far, he has managed to score 473 runs at an average of 31 in his 29 IPL games along with 15 wickets to his name. Stoinis, who found a buyer in Delhi Capitals at the dying moments, will be desperate to showcase his skills and live upto the expectations as he reunites with his old team.

4.  Yuvraj Singh:

There are only a few players in the world cricket, who can match the class of Yuvraj Singh with the bat. He is a stalwart of the game and has always delivered the goods for his side when it mattered the most. He played a great hand during India’s victorious campaign in the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007, but surprisingly, never delivered enough in Indian Premier League.

After having three disappointing seasons with Kings XI Punjab in 2011, Yuvraj turned up to lead Pune Warriors who had bought him for USD 1.8 million. And he had his best IPL season, finishing as the franchise’s top run-getter with 343 runs, but it wasn’t enough to keep the team from finishing second-last in the points table.

After missing 2012 IPL because of cancer, he failed to perform in 2013 and 2014, but Delhi bought him for INR 16 Crores in 2015. In 2016, Yuvraj was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 7 crores, where he had another couple of mediocre seasons. Injuries and the poor show let him down. At one stage, he even failed to attract buyers in IPL 2019 auctions, but Mumbai Indians gave him a final chance to make things fall in place. But, he once again was unable to deliver.

3. Aaron Finch:

Australia’s limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch is always a dangerous customer in the shortest format of the game with his ability to clear any grounds. Surprisingly, he never delivered similar goods for his IPL franchises. Finch grabbed eye-balls in 2013 when he smashed England all over the park in a T20I on his way to a sensational 63-ball 156, the highest individual score in that format. Later, he broke it by scoring 172.

Finch was a part of the Mumbai Indians squad in the 2015 IPL. However, he was ruled out of the tournament after tearing his left hamstring. Later, he was part of 5 IPL teams (Delhi Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians) and was a part of Gujarat Lions’ squad for the 9th edition of the cash-rich (IPL) league.

In 2018, he failed to perform for Kings XI Punjab and prefered to skip IPL 2019. For Australia, he scored 1878 runs in 58 games. In IPL, he scored 1737 in  75 games. Finch will now ply his trade for Royal Challengers Bangalore and will be desperate to improve the statistics.

2. Eoin Morgan:

Eoin Morgan is one of the few players, who has crossed 2000 runs in the T20 format in International stage. Surprisingly, he was never in the reckoning for any franchises. Perhaps his poor show in the earlier seasons has denied him an opportunity to play IPL again.

Initially, Royal Challengers Bangalore snapped him up for his base price for USD 220,000, but his performance in that edition was modest. IPL 2011 proved to be a tad better for Morgan as he represented Kolkata, scoring 137 runs in nine innings. Following his poor show, he was tried by SRH and KXIP, but the result was the same.

However, things have changed drastically now. Franchise T20 leagues across the globe have expressed their interest in purchasing Morgan’s services. His power hitting and ability to stay calm under pressure makes him an asset in the fast-moving T20 format. And Kolkata Knight Riders have roped him once again as they look to bring home their third IPL title.

The Kiwi batsman scored three centuries for New Zealand in the shortest format of the game. Surprisingly, he never displayed a similar show for his IPL franchises. There is a drastic difference between his numbers for New Zealand and his IPL franchises.  The owner of three centuries in T20I cricket never crossed a fifty-run mark in IPL.

In 13 IPL games, he scored 177 runs at an average of 14.75. Initially, he played for Mumbai Indians in 2016 before making his way to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. Later he was signed by Delhi Capitals for IPL 2019. And now, Munro has gone unsold in the high-profile IPL 2020 auctions.
