2019 World Cup: 5 Indian Players Who Can Break Into the Team On the Basis of Their Current Form

Updated - 24 Jun 2018, 10:30 AM

There is no doubt about the fact that team India is one of the top contenders to lift the World Cup next year. They have played some thoroughly professional cricket in the recent past and giving them the tag of favourites is a sheer resemblance of their performance across formats in the recent past. Their performance in the limited overs series in South Africa proved their utter ruthlessness. They were by far the better team and it might well happen against England in the upcoming 3 match series.

England has performed exceptionally in the last two years and it will be a tough ask for India to outage them especially in their home conditions. The World Cup will be held in a year’s time in the same country. Hence the Indian players will look to take full use of their opportunity and break into the squad for the quadrennial event

Here are 5 players who can break into the World Cup squad on the basis of their current form

Suresh Raina

The veteran cricketer hasn’t played an ODI since October 2015. However, he made his national comeback very recently when he was named the replacement for Ambati Rayudu in the ODI squad. The latter failed to pass the yo-yo test. Raina who was waiting in the wings was called up and he will look to make full use of his opportunity.

The southpaw has been in the Indian set-up for more than a decade. Hence he has a bundle of experience. Raina has played well in England earlier. Hence if he plays well in the 3 match ODI series, Raina could well turn out to be one of the vital cog in the Indian middle order.

Shreyas Iyer

Iyer has been in and around the national set-up for the last year or so. He has played a few ODI’s for India. He was part of the squad which toured South Africa. Iyer played all the games but failed to put on a big score. He has looked good in patches but hasn’t been able to carry on from his good starts. However, given his abilities and talent Iyer might well be drafted into the Indian squad for the World Cup.

Iyer was quite fantastic with the bat for Delhi Daredevils. He captained them later on in the tournament when Gautam Gambhir stood down. Despite not being able to turn their fortunes around, Shreyas did bring some joy to the Delhi fans. He will surely look to make a mark in the ODI series in England.

Rishabh Pant

The southpaw has been in murderous mood in the recent past. He has smashed star bowlers with disdain and has made them look clueless in front of his whirlwind batsmanship. In the IPL, he smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 26 runs in the final over of a group match. He smashed an unbeaten 128 of just 63 deliveries against the Sunrisers Hyderad who was one of the best bowling teams in the tournament.

Pant has the ability to walk into the Indian team solely as a batsman. With Dhoni around, he won’t be given the gloves yet. However, given his batting exploits, the team management might be tempted to give him a break anytime soon. He has looked totally confident against genuine good bowlers and has smashed them with authority.

Sanju Samson

Samson has been around the international radar for a while but hasn’t played enough matches for India. With a strong middle order, Samson hasn’t quite got the break. However, he had earlier failed in yo-yo tests. It has become mandatory for every player to pass the test in order to be eligible for selection in the national team. He is one of the finest talents in the Indian circuit but he has to work on his fitness.

However, you won’t find any flaws while he is fielding. Samson looks agile but has to work a bit harder. He can hit the ball a long way and has the ability to decimate any bowling attack on his day. If India has middle order woes they might think of a Samson.

Siddharth Kaul

The medium pacer from the Sunrisers Hyderad was quite spectacular during the Indian Premier League. He was the joint highest wicket-taker for Hyderabad alongside Rashid Khan. Kaul wasn’t quite at his best during the business end of the tournament. However, his consistent performances during the major part of the group stage prompted the Indian selectors to include him in the limited overs squad for the tour of England.

He will surely look to grab the opportunity with both hands. However, there is no surety on the fact whether he would get a break during the England tour. He will surely look to impress the selectors and confirm his name for the World Cup next year.
