It is safe to say that whenever the history of English white-ball cricket is written, the name of World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan will be earmarked in red-letters. After years of underperformance and inability to crack the white-ball cricket code, England finally claimed their hands on the coveted silverware- the 50-over World Cup- at the Mecca of Cricket Lord’s as they became only the third side in the history of the game to win the quadrennial event on home soil.

English white-ball cricket was in doldrums back in 2015. After having dropped their regular skipper Alastair Cook on the eve of the World Cup, Eoin Morgan’s side were humiliated in the quadrennial event as they bowed out from the league-stage after a morale-shellacking defeat to Bangladesh.

Post that disappointment, skipper Eoin Morgan and coach Trevor Bayliss infused a sense of ruthlessness in the set-up where the only mantra waa ‘Attack, Attack, Attack’. And it is this journey that makes Eoin Morgan incredibly proud.

“It feels amazing. I think the journey that we went on is probably the most exciting. In 2015, the embarrassing nature in which we were bundled out of that World Cup and the journey we embarked on to try and change the brand of cricket that we played with a new group of extremely talented players over the course of 4 years – it’s brilliant. Just being able to impart some of my knowledge and experience along with some very senior players and a group of great support staff who always continue to question what we do in a good way in order to hold us accountable,” Eoin Morgan, England’s World Cup-winning captain was quoted as saying by ANI.

The journey eventually culminated in the most dramatic circumstances one could ever imagine as England beat New Zealand in the World Cup final courtesy the boundary count after the actual game and the succeeding Super Over ended in a tie. No wonder Morgan has hailed it as the best game that has ever been played.

He added: “It sort of culminated in last year’s World Cup. The final was the most dramatic game of cricket and the best game of cricket that probably has ever been played which contributes to the hype of it. But I think one of the great things about it was on the day of that great game of cricket was, it’s always now associated with the longest ever Wimbledon final that was epic as well. It helped us in growing cricket outside of the normal bubble that we’re already into a different audience, and for us, at home, it has lifted the profile of the game like we’ve never seen,”

Meanwhile, the English captain was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 IPL auction and the Irishman is looking forward to spending time with the likes of Dinesh Karthik, if and when the tournament starts.
