Five Cricketers Who Have Played For Most Number Of IPL Franchises

It’s not uncommon for cricketers to play for multiple IPL franchises. The franchise owners retain only the very best cricketers and only a handful of players able to maintain a level of consistency to ensure their retention. Hence, a majority of players find themselves in the auction pool, open for any teams to secure their services.

Over the years, plenty of players have managed to feature for multiple IPL franchises. For some cricketers, the fortunes have massively turned around by switching teams; however, again, the lack of consistency triggered moving franchises from one to another. Also, in search of better utilization of their skills and more opportunities, some players tend to seek changes.

We take a look at five cricketers who played for the most number of franchises:

Yuvraj Singh – 6

Yuvraj Singh is the highest-earning player in a single IPL auction when Delhi Daredevils shelled out an enormous INR 16 crores in 2015. While Yuvraj Singh’s international career was an illustrious one, he endured a modest IPL tenure in 11 years. He averaged only 24.78 with 13 fifties in 132 matches.

The 38-year old plied his trade for six franchises, beginning from Kings XI Punjab, Pune Warriors, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Mumbai Indians till 2019. Yuvraj was part of Sunrisers’ campaign when they lifted the trophy in 2016 while his most successful was the 2014 season when he mustered 376 runs in 14 games.

Parthiv Patel – 6

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has always been on the fringes of the national team and his IPL career was no different. Parthiv Patel has opened the innings in IPL in 116 franchises, a position in which he has 2511 out of his 2848 runs in 139 matches. The 35-year old began his IPL stint with the Chennai Super Kings.

The Gujarat-born keeper-batsman has also featured for six franchises in Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians while his current team is Royal Challengers Bangalore. Parthiv was part of Mumbai Indias’ two title-winning campaigns in 2015 and 2017. The veteran’s most successful edition was 2017 when he made 395 runs in 16 games with the bat.

Thisara Perera – 6

Across only 37 IPL matches, Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera has played for six franchises. Thisara Perera is one player, who possesses enormous potential; however, has not translated to many performances. The bowling all-rounder has a batting average of 19.98 in 164 ODIs while a bowling average of 32.95 is reasonably credible.

The 31-year old has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and Rising Pune Supergiants. Perera was part of CSK’s squad when they lifted their first trophy in 2010. On the other hand, the Colombo-born enjoyed his best season with Hyderabad in 2013 when he picked up 19 wickets and scored 233 runs.

Dinesh Karthik – 6

Dinesh Karthik has played an enormous 182 IPL games from 2008 to 2019, scoring 3656 runs and has proved himself as a genuine match-winner with the bat. From 2008 to 2019, Dinesh Karthik has featured for six franchises and became the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018.

The keeper-batsman has started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils and moved on to Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Lions. Karthik’s most successful season was the 2013 one when he made 510 runs in 19 games. However, the 35-year old’s average of 49.80 was the highest in a single season.

Aaron Finch – 8

Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch will play for his eighth franchise in Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020.

In only 75 games, Aaron Finch has already donned the jersey of seven cash-rich league’s teams from 2010. Until 2012, the powerful opening batsman featured in only nine matches.

The 33-year old began his career with Rajasthan Royals and migrated to Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, and Kings XI Punjab.

The Victorian enjoyed his best season in 2013 when he scored 456 runs for the Sunrisers, including four fifties. As a destructive batsman at the top of the order, Finch would be aiming to spearhead RCB to their maiden title victory.
