The Afghanistan selection committee on Friday announced a list of young players who are slated to attend a two-week training camp in India.
There is no doubt about the fact that the nation has improved by leaps and bounds in the current years. It has been their impressive performances in the shorter formats of the game which had paved their way to becoming a Test playing nation.
Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Cricket Board will select the best 21 young cricketers for the national team. As per reports from the board, 22 members of the national team will also join the youngsters who will be part of the training camp.
Out of the 43 players, 24 among them will be selected for the national team to play in next year’s World Cup. The tournament will be played in England and Wales next year.
Actual Goal is to select best available options in the country says Mongal
“They are the players who we think are good for future of Afghanistan’s cricket and can fill the gaps in the national team,” said Wali Amin who is a member of the selection committee.
Meanwhile former Afghan cricketer and the current head of the selection panel, Nowroz Mangal said the actual goal of the training camp is to select the best available options in the country. They have to start preparing for the next year’s quadrennial event.
“After the completion of the training, 24 out of 43 players will be selected for the national cricket team,” Mangal said.
The decision comes after Afghanistan qualified for the World Cup 2019. It was possible only after the Asian team won the World Cup Qualifiers Championship last month.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan has been awarded Test status and is all set to play their first ever Test match against neighbours India on 14th June. It will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
