Bangladesh Cricket, on Tuesday (October 29), suffered a mighty blow with their talismanic allrounder Shakib Al Hasan getting a two-year ban with one year suspended from the ICC. The governing body of the game took the extreme step after Shakib Al Hasan failed to report multiple approaches made to him by a bookie.

In the last couple of years, a bookie named Deepak Aggarwal approached Shakib Al Hasan through WhatsApp on a number of occasions to get details about the team. However, the Bangladesh star did not inform the ICC or even the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about the same.

Shakib Al Hasan’s ban will end in October next year provided he satisfies the ICC with his actions. In order to avoid the one-year suspended sentence coming into effect, Shakib must not commit any offence under the Anti-Corruption Unit code during the initial one-year suspension. He will also have to participate regularly in anti-corruption education and/or rehabilitation programmes.

The Bangladesh fans, nonetheless, feel that the punishment given to Shakib Al Hasan is harsh. As soon as ICC announced their verdict, the fans took to social media to vent their anger. And some fans even dug out the past to claim that Shakib was treated unfairly. Few of the fans even dragged India superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma into the muddle.

While some posted a photo of Virat Kohli posing with a bookie, some posted about the incident when both the India captain and Rohit were spotted with a bookie. They pointed at the Al Jazeer report of last year which claimed that match-fixer Aneel Munawar and his associates were seen talking to the Indian stars during the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2012.

Apart from Virat and Rohit, the report had also claimed that Munawar was spotted with Indian players like Suresh Raina and Lakshmipathy Balaji and Andy Bichel, the Australian coach. Meanwhile, a few fans also said that the ICC never deals strictly with the players of India, Australia and England.
