Former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin opened up about how England would be feeling after their narrow loss against Australia in the recently concluded first Test of the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. He said that they missed a lot of chances and need to regroup ahead of the next game.

England suffered a heartbreaking loss in the first Test of the Ashes as they were handed a mere 2-wicket loss. For most oft of the game they were on top but they failed to remove Australian tailenders in the second innings and eventually lost a cliffhanger.

Chasing the target of 280 runs, Australia found themselves in deep trouble as they were left tottering at 227/3. It seemed that England would win. But Pat Cummins (44*) along with Nathan Lyon (16*) took charge and won the game. The duo stitched 50 plus partnership and helped their side take a lead of 1-0.

Brad Haddin said that England would be hurt after the loss and they missed quite a few tricks to win the game. Speaking to ‘Willow Talk’ cricket podcast, he said:

“Ben stokes said all the right things that they’re here to entertain and we had many people with bums on the corner of their seats enjoying it. B******t! They lost the Test match, mate that hurts. Stuart Broad gave everything he possibly could. They missed a lot of chances in this Test match that could have changed the result of the game. They need to find a way to regroup.”

Ashes 2023: “Stokes has to believe that declaration was right,” says Ben Stokes

One of the main talking points of the game was the surprise declaration that Ben Stokes made in the first innings. Joe Root was batting at unbeaten 118 runs and England’s score was 393/8. Skipper Ben Stokes called his team back as he wanted to have a go at Australian batters on the last 20 minutes of Day 1.

Brad Haddin said that Ben Stokes has to believe that his decision to declare was right. He said that his surprise call will be questioned. He elaborated:

“He (Stokes) has to believe that (declaration was right) because that’s the way they have played their game. But if you look at it from an Australian point of view, they lost the toss on what is probably one of the most placid wickets ever in the UK and got England out under 400, they are happy. So this style of play may also open a debate whether that decision was right.”

England would be hoping for a better result in the second match. The second Test of the Ashes 2023 is slated to take place at Lord’s in London. The game is scheduled to be taken place from 28th June.
