Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey opened up about Virat Kohli and Steve Smith’s advice to him for playing reverse sweeps. He said that when guys like these tell you about such things, you need to listen.

Alex Carey of late has been getting out a lot to reverse sweeps. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India earlier this year, most of his dismissals came in such fashion and if this was not enough he got out the same way in the first innings of the ICC World Test Championship Final as well.

But Alex Carey soon rectified it and didn’t play a single reverse sweep at all in Australia’s second innings of the World Test Championship final. As a result of that, he played a valuable innings of 66 runs and helped his side win the game.

Alex Cary was cautious even in the ongoing first Test of the Ashes 2023 against England as he didn’t play a single reverse sweep till the time he crossed his half-century. He scored 66 runs and helped Australia reach close to England’s 393 runs.

Alex admitted that there was no need for him to play that shot in the ICC World Test Championship Final and when guys like Steve Smith and Virat Kohli told you not to play, you listen to them. Speaking to Cricket Australia, he said:

“There was no need to play that at The Oval in the first innings. When you have Virat Kohli and Steve Smith saying, ‘what are you doing that for?’, you probably listen to them. The opportunity I saw after 50 yesterday was (Ben) Duckett came into a point and no one was boundary-riding out there.”

Ashes 2023: “Usman Khawaja’s patience again was evident – Alex Carey

Alex Carey further went on to laud Usman Khawaja for his staggering 141 runs knock in the first innings and said that his patience was evident.

He also talked about the game situation and elaborated: “I didn’t get one away but I probably saw opportunities to score elsewhere. It will ebb and flow again. Usman Khawaja’s patience again was evident. The wickets won’t always be like this one.

“But in saying that, there are still opportunities for bowlers to take wickets when you set the right fields and apply enough pressure and hit the length for long enough.”

At stumps on Day 3, England were 28/2 in their second innings and were leading Australia by 35 runs.
