Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal fractured his left wrist while batting against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2018 against Sri Lanka on September 15. According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Iqbal will miss cricketing action for the next six weeks which rules him out of the rest of the tournament.

Iqbal was the only quality opener for Bangladesh. They haven’t found an able partner for Iqbal over the years in all formats of the game. He has been the constant feature at the top of the order for Bangladesh.

It is indeed a big blow to Bangladesh for during the ongoing Asia Cup event. However, the team management hasn’t quite thought of flying in a replacement. In all likelihood, Mohammad Mithun will go up to the opening position to accompany Liton Das.

A replacement for Tamim Iqbal hasn’t been named yet

“There have not been any plans for a replacement yet,” team manager and former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud stated.

“We brought 16 players and brought in Mominul with the injuries of Shakib [Al Hasan] and Tamim in mind. We have enough good players on the bench – we have Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul. So there are no thoughts about replacing Tamim yet,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mahmud is also pretty optimistic about the fact that Mushfiqur Rahim will continue his tremendous run. He scored a magnificent 144 off 150 deliveries as Bangladesh post the score of 261 runs.

Well, the bowlers then did the job and gave Bangladesh a convincing victory. However, a long-standing rib injury had flung up during the match which might be an issue as the tournament progresses.

“He still has slight pain, but we know he is a very good fighter. To tell the truth, I was a little nervous the night before the match about him, but the way he reacted I think he will be okay,” Mahmud concluded.

Bangladesh has more or less sealed their place in the Super 4’s with a huge victory. They will back themselves to beat Afghanistan. However, it is the same nation who defeated them 3-0 in a Twenty20 International series not long ago.

BCB had earlier brought relatively some new faces in the Asia Cup 2018 squad.
