The first edition of the tournament was held in 1984 in the UAE, a year after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was introduced.
The council had initially decided to conduct the competition between the Asian countries every two years. The ACC announced that the tournament would be held after every four years from 2008 onwards.
Initially, it was an played in the 50-over format. However, in 2015, the world governing body International Cricket Council announced that from 2016 the tournament will be played on a rotation basis between One-day International and Twenty20 International format. The six teams have formed two groups A and B with three sides in each group. India, Pakistan and Hong Kong have formed Group A, while, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are in the other group.
