AUS vs ENG 2018: Big Injury Blow for Australia Ahead of Gabba ODI
Australia fast-bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the upcoming second One-Day International (ODI) against England on Friday (January 19) owing to illness.
Following a gruelling Ashes where he played all the five games in the series to pick up 21 wickets, the right-arm pacer was rested for the series-opener in Melbourne on Sunday (January 14). The 27-year old was set to replace Pat Cummins for the upcoming game in Brisbane but will now miss the action after being struck down by a virus. He has returned home to Sydney to recover.
Hazlewood is not the first player to suffer the illness this summer. Before him, Tim Paine, David Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins and English duo Joe Root and batsman James Vince were also affected by illness. Cummins and Smith both had an upset stomach during the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne while Warner did not take part in the training session before the first ODI.
On the other hand, Paine missed training on Wednesday with gastroenteritis and Australia has flown in uncapped Alex Carey as cover for the upcoming game. Root played the final Ashes Test despite suffering from gastroenteritis while Vince also could not make his debut in the Big Bash League due to the illness.
Meanwhile, with Cummins already rested and Hazlewood returning home, 21-year old Jhye Richardson is now all set to be handed his ODI debut cap. The 21-year old had made a name for himself in Australia’s domestic arena for his ability to deliver 145-plus kmph thunderbolts.
So far, the West Australian pacer has only played eight List A matches and made his international debut last year during the T20 series against Sri Lanka.
Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc is likely to spearhead the pace attack that also has Andrew Tye. Australia are currently trailing the five-match series 1-0 after losing the first ODI by five wickets.
