When Mohammed Shami got picked for the Australia ODI’s, it was a moment of relief for him; as he has been performing well in Tests of late. Meanwhile, in the second ODI in Adelaide, Shami shared the new ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Likewise in the first ODI, the pair did some damage early on. As Bhuvneshwar got captain Finch bowled, it was Shami’s lethal bouncer who got the better off Alex Carey.

Shami rises through the ranks

In Tests, Mohammed Shami remains Virat’s go-to-bowler with the new and the old ball. Now, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah in ODI’s, the onus was once again on the India pacer. Though he had bowled tight lines and good yorkers in the SCG game, Shami altered his length a bit at the Adelaide Oval. Bowling first after losing the toss, he and Bhuvi made the new ball do the talking.

Meanwhile, Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper-batsman was middling the ball well. Coming on the front foot early on, he defied the movement off the pitch in the first few overs. However, Mohammed Shami’s change in tactics got India the second wicket inside Powerplay. The right-arm pacer, in his fourth over, bowled a sharp bouncer to which Carey had no answer. The left-handed batsman didn’t get in the best of positions to play the pull shot; eventually failing in his attempt and gave India a chance to celebrate.

Incoming ball – a worry for Finch

Aaron Finch, Australia’s ODI captain, has his demons to deal with. An incoming delivery has become a cause of concern for the right-hander. Not once, not twice but for the third occasion in the India series, Finch got dismissed off an inswinger. First, in the Adelaide Test, Ishant broke his stumps with a beauty. Later, in the first ODI itself, Bhuvneshwar found the gap between his bat and pad. Now, in the Adelaide ODI, the manner of dismissal didn’t change, as Bhuvi again dismantled his stumps off an incoming delivery.
