Babar Azam has grown by leaps and bounds in the past two years or so. Having made his debut back in 2015, Babar Azam, courtesy his sumptuous strokeplay and consistent run of scores, has impinged himself in the folklore as one of the potential modern-day greats.

Babar Azam was recently named as the captain of the Pakistan ODI side. He has been leading the T20I side since last October and a huge task of resurrecting Pakistan team white-ball cricket galore for the talented batsman.

Former Pakistan bowler Tanvir Ahmed has advised Babar Azam to work on improving his English and his overall personality, which he feels is necessary, considering a captain has to address the media on a consistent basis besides the usual pre and post-match interviews.

“Try to improve your personality. By personality, I mean a person can change his dressing sense. Babar Azam also needs to improve his English, which is necessary. Whenever someone becomes a captain, he has to talk during the toss and post-match presentation. Plus, he will also give interviews on various channels when he tours different countries,” Tanvir Ahmed was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Ahmed further wants Babar to lead his team by example by being disciplined and an epitome of supreme fitness so that his players can take a leaf out of his book and follow his footsteps.

“A leader needs to be punctual and organized as the players follow the captain. He should also maintain his fitness level, because if the captain himself isn’t fit, then he can’t advise other players on improving their fitness,” he said.

Captaining a Pakistan team means the player will always be under intense scrutiny fro the media and Ahmed cautioned Babar to be mentally strong and tolerant towards criticism.

“It remains to be seen how Babar leads the team. He needs to be mentally strong as even a slight dip in performance as captain will invite a lot of criticism from media. So he will have to tolerate the criticism and not react to it. If he reacts, then things will get very difficult for him,” he added.

Tanvir concluded by hailing Babar for becoming the captain of the Pakistan team within a space of five years, terming it as an ‘extra-ordinary’ achievement.

“Captaincy isn’t an easy job. However, I am happy for Babar as he has become captain after only five years since making his debut in 2015. If any player becomes a captain in such a short period of time, then it is an extraordinary achievement for him.” Tanvir Ahmed signed off.

Babar Azam’s next assignment will be against England when Pakistan travels the English isles for three T20Is and as many Test matches.
