Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan had to miss the final of the 2018 Asia Cup against India. He has stated that he will be out of cricketing action for at least three months after an infection on his left little finger which delayed the surgery. Shakib had to also miss Bangladesh’s final Super four match against Pakistan. He was unable to bear the pain anymore and after reaching Dhaka doctors found out that the pus had spread to his wrist needing an immediate treatment.

Now till the time the infection is cured, Shakib Al Hasan won’t be able to have surgery on it. He had picked up the injury back in January this year. Meanwhile, the all-rounder further revealed that any further delay in the procedure would have left his wrist disabled.

Shakib Al Hasan was not in a good situation when he left the Bangladesh team during the Asia Cup

“The moment I arrived in the hospital, the doctors told me that I have to get the pus out as soon as possible,” Shakib was quoted as saying by Prothom Alo on Saturday.

He further claimed that if he had waited another few days his wrist would have been disabled. He felt even after the pus was taken out, the problem will persist until the infection is cured. Unless that time, a surgery cannot be done on that finger.

“Any delay would put me in great danger as the infection spread till my wrist. If I had waited another few days, my wrist would have become disabled. I feel better after they took out the pus, but the problem is until the infection isn’t gone, there isn’t going to be a surgery on my injured finger. It will take other 2-3 weeks to fix. After surgery, I will need eight weeks, which means I am out for three months.”

It was Shakib Al Hasan decision to play in the Asia Cup.

The 31-year-old said it was his decision to play in the Asia Cup despite the possibility of further aggravating the injury.

“The BCB president [Nazmul Hassan] asked if I could play the Asia Cup or I could go for the surgery. He told me to take the decision. When I asked the physio about what damage it may have, he told me it won’t be that dangerous. Then I decided that since the Asia Cup is important for us, I will play 4-5 matches with the pain,” he explained.

Before the start of the tournament, Shakib had said that he was only 25-30% fit. However, in the end, he managed to play all but all matches except the final two and performed well especially with the ball in hand. After his injury, he also wrote an emotional letter to his fans on his Instagram handle.
