The highly anticipated finals of the Big Bash League (BBL) for the 2017-18 season took place at the Adelaide Oval between Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers.
The hosts, buoyed by the presence of their international stars Travis Head and Alex Carey, posted a mammoth total of 202 runs in front of the Hurricanes, as their opener Jake Weatherald smashed an epic knock of 115 off 70 balls.
While trying to chase down Striker’s daunting total, opener D’Arcy Short and captain George Bailey offered some hope to Hurricanes’ clinching their maiden trophy with the score at 87-1 after ten overs.
However, it all changed post-Bailey’s dismissal, as the Tasmanian team lost their way during the last ten overs.
Coming to bat at the number six slot, much expectation resided on Hurricanes’ spitfire wicket-keeper Matthew Wade who helped his team win the semi-finals against favourites Perth Scorchers, with the help of his 45-ball 71.
However, fellow keeper Tim Paine was favoured for the opening slot along with Australian international D’Arcy Short during the all-important finals.

To make matters worse for the short-tempered left-hander, he was run out by his partner Dan Christian without him facing a ball. Christian tried to heave the ball from Ben Laughlin in the 18th over of the inning but only managed to inside edge to the keeper Carey. Carey made no mistake and ran Wade out with an accurate hit to the stumps.
Cameras displayed a grumpy Wade in the Hobart Hurricanes’ dugout display his agitation, as he smashed his New Balance bat on to his pads in anguish. Wade later was on his way to the pavilion.
