Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced a revised contract earlier this week. Meanwhile, the apex body introduced a new pay grade A+ for top cricketers. However, MS Dhoni missed out on the new grade. BCCI now has revealed the reason behind his exclusion.
Meanwhile, Dhoni has announced his retirement from Test cricket, but still is a crucial member in shorter formats. Also, he will be pivotal for India in the upcoming ICC World Cup, next year.
However, the A+ grade includes the likes of Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Shikhar Dhawan who all three formats for the country. While they will earn seven crores, Dhoni will get five crores as he is in the pay grade below them.
BCCI reveals the reason:
A BCCI official cleared the air stating that the Indian board has paid more to the players who play all the formats. Further, he added that top cricketers were taken into consideration while taking the decision.
“It’s a simple logic that selectors have applied. Play more and get paid more. The five in question are indispensable in all three formats right now. They deserved to be paid more. Also, Ravi Shastri, Kohli, and Dhoni have been taken into confidence,” an official said to PTI.
However, he revealed that players who are certainties at least in one of the formats were given the A Grade.
“The second group comprises players who are certainties in at least one format like Saha and Pujara. They are in the second group because of their dependability in at least one format,” the official concluded.
