The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could end the term of (retd) Justice DK Jain, Ombudsman and Ethics Officer, BCCI.

However, there are talks in the media that an extension can also be granted to him. Justice Jain was handed a one year contract in February 2019 which will end this week.

BCCI’s apex council will meet on Sunday in New Delhi to finalize the call. Until now, it has not been confirmed whether or not a new name has been finalized or Justice Jain will be handed a contract extension.

As per the sources, it is BCCI’s sole prerogative to take a call on this matter.

However, the sources also say that a contract extension for Justice Jain is a good possibility as he has been neutral in dealing with certain severe cases during his tenure.

BCCI Ombudsman Term Ends

“I allowed the principles of natural justice to prevail. I tried to do things the best I could. Let’s see what happens,” Justice Jain said.

As of now, Jain is still in the process of adjudicating cases of conflicts, including one involving BCCI’s operations team member Mayank Parikh. Parikh, despite owning clubs in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which he has now given up, continued to be part of BCCI’s operations team.

It remains to be seen if the ombudsman’s office will take a retrospective view of developments.

Appointed at Rs 15 lakh per month, the ombudsman and ethics officer’s role was to look into cases of conflict in Indian cricket and violation of rules as per the newly-drafted board constitution.
In doing so, Justice Jain took on some of the biggest names in Indian cricket as and when complaints were received.
