The BCCI has confirmed the Indian High Commission had invited all the players along with their family after Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma was targeted by the fans for appearing in the Indian team’s picture at the High Commission event in London on Tuesday.

In the last few years, Kohli and Anushka have seen the extremes from the fans. While they are being adored by one and all, they also face the wrath of the fans for the smallest of reasons. Not very long ago, Anushka was trolled by the fans after her appearance in the stadium coincided with Kohli’s poor performance. Well, on Tuesday, the couple faced something similar.

The BCCI had posted a picture of the team members and support staff with officials of the Indian High Commission in London. Anushka also features in the picture, standing next to Kohli. However, her presence did not go down well with the fans who are clueless as to why she is being allowed to travel with the team in the first place.

Anushka is the only star wife who is still accompanying her partner on the tour. What made matters worse that Anushka was standing in the front row in front of the players. Not surprisingly, the fans did not take long to express their displeasure.

However, the BCCI has said that no official protocol was broken. A source in the board confirmed that the Indian High Commission had invited all the players along with their family.

“This is the norm wherever the team travels. The High Commission invites the players with their relatives. And it is eventually the decision of the individuals. Even in London the players were invited along with their partners. There has been no breach of any protocol,” a source in the BCCI told Hindustan Times on conditions of anonymity.

A source from the High Commission also agreed to the fact, saying:

“Anushka Sharma came to the reception for the Indian cricket team at the invitation of the high commissioner and his wife. The reception was hosted by the high Commissioner and his wife and not the High Commission. The group photo was taken as the team were entering the house. Ajinkya Rahane may have stood at the back on his own He wasn’t asked to stand there. The reception was at the high commissioner’s residence and not at the high commission.”

Meanwhile, India are trailing the five-match Test series against England 1-0 after losing the opener by 31 runs. The second Test gets underway at Lord’s on Thursday.
