The coronavirus pandemic has forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to shut down its headquarter in Mumbai from Tuesday with its employees being told to work from home. The decision comes just days after BCCI suspended all the international and domestic fixtures in the country.

Last week, the Indian cricket board suspended the IPL till at least April 15 as a precautionary measure. Just hours later, the board also called off the ODI series between India and South Africa and announced that it would be played at a later date this year. The board also called off the domestic games in the wake of the pandemic.

According to ANI, the BCCI has given the employees the option to “work from home” with all the cricketing operations already being suspended till further notice.

“All employees in Mumbai Headquarters have been given the option to work from home from tomorrow onwards. Those who want to come to the office can come,” ANI tweeted on Monday.

The pandemic is wreaking havoc across the world but the Indian government’s brilliant management has still kept things under control under the country. India has so far reported 114 positive cases with two deaths. On the other hand, the global death toll has crossed 6,000 and the number of infected is over 160,000.

The pandemic has taken a toll on sporting events all over the world, leading to all major tournaments being cancelled or postponed. In cricket, almost all international and domestic fixtures around the world have been either postponed or called off.

Even the Tokyo Olympics, which is scheduled to start in less than five months on July 24, is under a cloud due to the growing threat caused by the virus. Several Olympic qualifying events, including those for climbing, boxing, fencing and judo have been cancelled or postponed.
