There were not many leg-spinners who were even close to Subhash Gupte let alone being better than him.

149 wickets at a stunning average of 29.55  in just 36 games pretty much proves that he was nothing less than a terror for the opposition.

Gupte made a slow start to his Test career but started proving his mettle from the 1952-53 season when he took 50 wickets.

His 9 for 102 in an innings against West Indies at Kanpur in 1958 is still a part of the cricketing folklore.

During the tour of England in 1959, he picked up a staggering 95 wickets (26.58) although only 17 of them were taken in the five Tests.

Gupte had later moved to Trinidad after marrying a West Indian girl. However, he had returned to make five more appearances in the sixties.

His first-class career was equally impressive where he picked up 530 wickets with a stunning average of 23.71.

Well, Gupte’s career is nothing less than remarkable and even legendary Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi is wowed by his feats. In fact, Bedi is so impressed that he urged others to share any video clip of the former leggie if they have one for the betterment of current spinners.

Bedi posted his message on Twitter after a cricket page wished Gupte on his birthday on Monday.

Sharing an anecdote on Gupte, Bedi wrote:

Sir Garfield Sobers once told me Gupte could turn on a glass table..Vow.!Surely Subhash must have been truly great leggie..sadly Indn Crkt does not have any movie of his bowling action..if someone has pl reproduce fr benefit o modern leg spinners..Cheers All..!!.”
