West Indies legend Brian Lara has revealed the favourites in the upcoming Test series between England and West Indies. International cricket is all set to return to the fore as England lock horns against the Caribbeans in the first of the three Tests in Southampton. The entire series will take place behind closed doors as well as bowlers have to acclimatise themselves without saliva to shine the ball.

While West Indies beat England in the Caribbean in 2019 to regain the Wisden Trophy, things will get tough as they become the visitors now. Viv Richards was the last West Indian captain to win a Test series in England back in 1988 while their only victory in 2017 in Leeds was their first since 2000. Hence, with a reasonably second-string team, Jason Holder’s men will have it far from easy. In contrast, England have a strong and well-balanced unit.
Brian Lara, who kept the Englishmen on his knees often during his playing days, mentioned that his countrymen have to start applying the pressure straight away and cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal. The 50-year old acknowledged that England are definite favourites. Lara believes that they have to take the lead and maintain it since the quality of batting line-up West Indies, will not allow them to last five days.
“England are not beaten very easily at home and are overwhelming favourites. I don’t think they can last five days, so they have to take these games in four days. They have to establish a lead and keep it. They have to hit the road running and stamp their authority on England,” Brian Lara stated as quoted by India Today.
It would mean a lot to all West Indians if they could win: Brian Lara
Brian Lara went on to add that the series will grab the entire world’s attention and would be a treat to watch if the rubber is competitive. The Prince of Trinidad feels that the first day of the first Test will set the tone for the remaining games for the tourists and will mean a lot if they manage to pull off a win.
“It’s going to be a series that’s watched all around the world and everybody is hoping to see a competitive series. It would mean a lot to all West Indians if they could win, If they play good cricket on the first day of the Test series, show they have the mettle to perform against England, that’s the key,” he added.
