Chris Woakes Doubtful For The Boxing Day Test Due To Illness

The all-rounder from England, Chris Woakes, who is currently suffering from fever, is unlikely to feature in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa starting from December 26 (Thursday). He is the latest addition to the long list of England cricketers who are suffering from fever. Fast bowler Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer and left-arm spinner Jack Leach have yet to bowl a ball on tour after illness ruled them out of England’s pair of warm-up games in Benoni.
Woakes missed today’s training, and with 48 hours to go, he is doubtful to recover for the first game of the series. Earlier today, Ben Stokes’ father, Ged, was rushed to hospital with a severe illness. Stokes missed England’s training session to be at his bedside and is also a doubt for the first Test in Centurion. While Archer, Leech, and Broad have returned to training, Joe Root said that he’d have to trust the trio’s personal assessments as to whether they felt ready for Test cricket so soon after falling ill.

“We’ve had a bit of bad news with Woakesy going down ill, he won’t be training (on Tuesday), so we’ll see how that unfolds,” England captain Joe Root told reporters. “It’s quite frustrating. He seems to have got to the doc quite quickly, so we’ll see how he pulls up at the back-end of (Tuesday) and (Wednesday). We have to handle it. We’ll have to wait and see. We’ll make a very late call on our side,” he added.
England have called Dom Bess and Craig Overton as cover-ups and is likely to wait till the last hour before taking a call on their playing XI.
