New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori believes Virat Kohli has inculcated a lot of courage in wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Further, Vettori feels this is the primary reason behind Chahal’s phenomenal success in limited overs cricket.
Currently, Vettori is the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Furthermore, Kohli leads the side while Chahal is a crucial member of the team.
Meanwhile, Chahal is currently leading the wickets tally with 11 scalps in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. India leads the six-match series 3-0.
Daniel Vettori attributed IPL behind Chahal’s success:
The orthodox left-arm spinner believes the risks Chahal took during the IPL in a batting paradise like Chinnaswamy also attributed to his success.
“Yuzi is a brave bowler and it’s not easy when you are playing a lot of IPL matches at a small ground like the Chinnaswamy, which is conducive to batting,” Vettori said to PTI.
“He is prepared to attack the batsmen. This is a mindset that Virat has instilled in him while leading him at the RCB and now India. Surely, it’s paying dividends as we can see,” he added.
In addition, Vettori feels Chahal as a package if tough to tackle for a batsman. He also added that Chahal’s success outside has made him happy.
“Chahal is a very talented, skillful and accurate bowler. That package is tough to deal with as a batsman in any condition,” he said.
Vettori impressed with Kohli’s Captaincy:
Vettori admitted the best part of Kohli is, he is prepared to listen and learn. He played as a cricketer with Kohli in RCB before taking up the coach’s role.
“The good thing is that I have played with Virat for RCB before taking up the coach’s role. So, I really enjoy the two sides of him — aggression to win on the field, that desperation. While off the field he sits back and try to soak in information, not only about his own game but also about the team’s performance,” Vettori added.
The 39-year-old Vettori feels it is all about who is good in certain formats during a particular phase. He said this in context of a surge o wrist spinners.
In conclusion, Vettori also didn’t want to generalize that batsmen nowadays are not able to pick up wrist spinners easily.
