Darren Sammy has been critical about racism in cricket and away from it. Sammy called out his SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) teammate, which turned out to be fast bowler Ishant Sharma, for calling him ‘kaalu’. Now Darren Sammy has questioned Indians on their acceptance of the fairness cream which spreads discrimination.

The strong sentiments that Sammy has poured out comes in the wake of African-American George Floyd in the United States. Floyd was killed on May 25 in the Powderhorn community of Minneapolis, Minnestoa in the United States after an officer, Derek Chauvin, kept his knee on Flyod’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

“Your ad, Fair & Lovely says lovely people are the fairer people. That’s what it stands for, it hints at colourism,” Sammy was quoted as saying by Outlook in an interview.

However, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) had recently said that the would re-brand the product, dropping ‘Fair’ from it. The step was take days after Johnson & Johnson announced plans to discontinue the sale of its skin-whitening creams.

“We now announce that we will remove the word ‘Fair’ from our brand name Fair & Lovely. The new name is awaiting regulatory approvals, and the pack with the revised name will be available in the market in the next few months,” the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The fairness cream was launched in India in 1975.
