Dean Elgar Out Of Ranchi Test, Theunis de Bruyn Named Concussion Substitute

South Africa’s miseries in the ongoing series against India are showing absolutely no signs of coming to an end. Having already conceded the series, they are headed towards another big defeat in the ongoing third Test match in Ranchi. And any hopes of saving the game took another big blow when their star opener Dean Elgar was retired hurt in the second innings.
In the tenth over of the innings, Dean Elgar was hit on his helmet by a Umesh Yadav bouncer. The umpires then called for an early tea, giving the southpaw the time to recover. However, Dean Elgar decided against resuming his batting as he was retired hurt. Later, Cricket South Africa confirmed that Dean Elgar would take no further part in the game.

After the mandatory concussion test, the Proteas decided to include Theunis de Bruyn in the team as a concussion substitute. In the process, Dean Elgar became the first South Africa player to be concussed in a Test while de Bruyn became the first concussion replacement.

A couple of months ago in the Ashes, Marnus Labuschagne had become the first-ever concussion substitute after replacing Steve Smith in the Lord’s Test. Meanwhile, South Africa are in all sorts of trouble in the game. In reply to India’s first innings total of 497 for 9, they were all out for just 162 in their first innings.

Virat Kohli did not hesitate in imposing the follow-on and the Indian bowlers have totally justified his decision thus far. Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami came out all guns blazing to blow away South Africa’s top order. South Africa were reduced to 36 for 5 in the 17th over with Shami picking three wickets and Umesh picking the other two.
