With Chris Lynn as well as Robin Uthappa not a part of the team now, Kolkata Knight Riders will have to find a new opening combination for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The two-time winners had released their long-serving players last year and both were snapped by other teams in the auction.
Mumbai Indians secured Lynn’s services while Rajasthan Royals bought Uthappa. The Knight Riders will now have to find out a new opening combination. Last year, the likes of Lynn, Nitish Rana, Sunil Narine as well as young Shubman Gill had opened the innings for the Kolkata-based outfit.
Dean Jones’s suggestion for Knight Riders:
As the Knight Riders try out to find their new opening pair, former Australia batsman Dean Jones has revealed the name of the player he wants to see open the innings for the team. Dean Jones believes Knight Riders should open the innings with highly-rated Gill.
“I want to see Shubman Gill open the batting for Kolkata Knight Riders. I think there is an opportunity for it now and the time has come for them to put him at the top of the order and let him play, ” Dean Jones told Hindustan Times while naming the youngsters as one of the players he will be watching out this season.
Gill had opened the innings last year and played a stunning knock against eventual winners Mumbai Indians. He scored 76 off 45 balls to help his side pile up a record 232 for 2. The right-handed batsman has also shown he is well capable of delivering at the highest level of the game. He has scored over 200 runs in both the last two seasons and has four half-centuries to his name.
Dean Jones further said that he is also interested to see how Rishabh Pant performers for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020.
“I am also very keen to see how Rishabh Pant plays. He has been a bit up and down and it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure of knowing that Dhoni is back playing,” he said.
