Nazmul Hasan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, on Saturday (December 9) insisted that the board is no hurry to appoint a new head coach after the sudden resignation of Chandika Hathurusingha.

Hathurusingha’s tenure with Bangladesh was set to end after the 2019 World Cup. However, the 49-year old, who enjoyed a very successful spell with the ties, snapped up the ties prematurely to join Sri Lanka.

And while his sudden departure must have made BCB a bit disappointed but the board is not looking to rush things to get his replacement. The senior BCB officials convened for a meeting with the three captains – Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafee bin Mortaza, Shakib al Hasan along with some of the available resources of the team management to discuss their plan of action for their next series which is against Sri Lanka.

According to reports, the players and the support staff which attended the meeting assured the board members that the team could play against Sri Lanka with the existing backroom staff.

“We wanted to know whether we can play the series against Sri Lanka with present setup and everyone said they are confident that they can do it,” Nazmul Hasan told reporters after the meeting at a city hotel on Saturday.

“In that case we are not in a rush to select the head coach and go for the best possible solution,” he said. “It can happen. We can select the coach tomorrow during the board meeting but what if we don’t and how they would approach during this interim period.”

“We have asked them to take the preparation because we don’t want to rush things down. During the interim period there is Halsall and Sujon [Khaled Mahmud] along with Walsh and others and they said they are capable of handling the series against Sri Lanka,” he added.

Meanwhile, BCB had interviewed Richard Pybus last week while West Indian opener Phil Simmons reached Dhaka on Saturday to give his presentation in front of BCB to take charge of the team. Reports are also suggesting that either Khaled Mahmud or Richard Halsall will be appointed as an interim coach if the board does not appoint the head coach at the next meeting.
