Uncapped all-rounder Sam Curran has received his maiden England call-up for the upcoming tri-series against Australia and New Zealand next month. The Surrey star will join his elder brother Tom in England’s T20 squad. Tom, who is two years older, had already made his England debut in all the formats.

The 19-year old has been drafted into the squad in place of the rested Joe Root and also as cover for Ben Stokes who’s availability for the series is still uncertain following the news that he is required in court on February 13.

Stokes was expected to return to international cricket on February 13 but has now confirmed he would delay his comeback to appear in the court to answer a charge of affray about the incident outside a Bristol nightclub last September.

Curran, meanwhile, is quite experienced in the shortest format of the game. At just 19, he had already played 43 T20 matches in all. The left-arm pacer, who is known for his ability to swing the ball at a good pace, recently impressed for Auckland in New Zealand’s Super Smash T20 tournament.

He finished the tournament with 157 runs at an average of 26.16 and an excellent strike rate of 161.85 in addition to picking up nine wickets in as many games.

The highly-rated teenage all-rounder has long been earmarked for making it big after breaking into the Surrey side as a 17-year old in 2015.

Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan & Co. will play their first two games of the tri-series against Australia on February 7 and 10 in Hobart and Melbourne before flying out to New Zealand for another two group matches against the hosts on February 13 and 18.

The final, between the top two teams after the conclusion of the group stage, will be played in Auckland on February 21.
