Recently, former England skipper, Alastair Cook announced his international retirement. Cook now would play his final game against India at the Kia Oval, starting September 7th. Meanwhile, following his announcement, Cook’s teammate, James Anderson says the England veteran never had an ego.

However, there is no doubt about the fact that Cook is one of the finest batsmen ever to grace the game. It is true that his form in the last couple of years was nowhere close to what it used to be a decade back. However, he still finishes as the leading run-scorer for England in Test cricket with more than 12,000 runs.

Meanwhile, following his retirement, Cook was seen relaxing and reading a newspaper. The front of the paper had the headline read,  ‘Cook-the modern legend calls it a day.’  The picture was shared by his teammate, James Anderson with a nice caption.

“The thing I love most about Cooky is that there’s absolutely no ego,” Anderson wrote.

Alastair Cook is one of the greats of the game

Cook finished his career with more than 12,000 Test runs and 32 centuries under his belt. In the last two years, Alastair Cook was short of runs. However, just when his position in the side was in doubts, the southpaw scored a couple of double centuries against Australia and Windies to shut the critics up.

However, in the ongoing series, he has failed to score runs and has given away his wicket very cheaply on most occasions.

Criticism started flowing from every quarter after Cook got dismissed in a similar manner time and again. He edged full-length deliveries to the slip cordon. Even after getting himself in, Cook couldn’t quite continue and gave away his wickets so cheaply in the series so far. Despite his woes in the recent past, there is no denying the fact that Cook will remain as one of the greatest ever batsman produced by England.

The southpaw will be hopeful of finishing his career with a bang. It will be a perfect ending for Cook who has been a champion opening batsman for England over the last 12 years.

As of now, it will take a great effort for any other English batsmen to break the record of Alastair Cook in Test cricket.
