“India could have looked for a draw in the immediacy of Rahul’s dismissal. But they kept going for the target till Pant was around like they had done in Adelaide in 2014 in Virat’s first Test as captain. That is the character of this team — to strive for a result, no matter what. Their shot at redemption will come later in the year in Australia,” Laxman wrote in his column to Times of India.

The former Test specialist for India, VVS Laxman isn’t impressed with the way India tackled few situations on their United Kingdom (UK) tour. The classic right-handed batsman felt Virat Kohli-led side repeated the same mistakes. It eventually led India to give the advantage for England.
Barring Lord’s Test, India fought hard throughout the series. They got the moments in their hands at Edgbaston and Southampton as well. But their inability to rattle the tail-enders dented India’s chances in clinching the series.
Not getting off to the starts also played a key role – VVS Laxman
The Hyderabad cricketer Laxman maintained Indian team management to look after the mistakes which they committed during the series.
Laxman added that Indian team should sort out the opening vows. While adding getting good starts for the team, has to be the hallmark of the No.1 ranked team in ICC Test Rankings.
”The Indian think-tank will, I am sure, introspect and look inwards in the aftermath of the series defeat. The one thing they will recognise is that they kept repeating mistakes – allowing the tail to wag after making serious inroads into the top order, and not getting off to starts which is not the hallmark of the number one Test team of the world,” VVS Laxman wrote.
“I was delighted with the attitude of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant in a daunting run-chase at The Oval. From a position of no hope, they batted with freedom and expressed themselves beautifully with some of the best stroke-making of the series. Both men needed the hundreds; Rahul had had a disappointing tour till that point, while Pant faded away a little since his promising Trent Bridge debut,” he added.

Further, Laxman feels India would have gone for a draw after the dismissal of KL Rahul. He feels that India tried a bit hard for the massive target on the board. However, he added that it will help in the Australia tour.
